The Feng Shui of Your Bedroom

In Feng Shui two of the most important things to consider in a home are the positions and alignments of the front door to your home and the placement of the bed. The Chinese astrological and compass methods are traditionally used determine the best place in the house not only for assigning the bedroom, but the best wall in the bedroom on which to place the bed and the best colors to use to insure optimum health and rest.

The best orientation for the bed is determined by your Chinese astrological chart. Short of drawing up your Chinese astrological chart, however, here are some practical points you may want to consider.

The worst sleeping position is called the "coffin position." The coffin position is such that the foot of your bed points directly out the bedroom door. This is called the coffin position because it was the way bodies were laid out after death in ancient China. Sleeping in the coffin position exposes you to the Chi that rushes into the room; it can leave you feeling lethargic even if you get plenty of sleep. It may also make you feel unsettled and irritable, and not want to stay at home which then can upset your relationship. If your bedroom is too small or makes it impossible to place the bed in any position but the coffin position, you may remedy it by placing a piece of furniture such as a book case or chest between the foot of the bed and the bedroom door as a barrier.

The ideal position for the bed is diagonally opposite the bedroom door. There should be a solid wall behind the headboard. No wall behind the headboard may cause headaches and other health problems.

If you place the bed under a window, you will be exposed to cold air drafts and may have restless sleep and disturbing dreams. If you have no choice but to put your bed under the window, cover the window when you go to sleep.

It is generally inadvisable to place the bed along the same wall as the door or to lie with your head behind the door as that can make you feel insecure. You should also not sleep with your bed in a direct path of the bedroom door because the Chi coming in will cut across your body. It is not good to sleep with your head on a wall behind which is the toilet or stove. We will go further in a future article.
